Only 11% Nigerians use pipe-borne water, 4% use pipe-borne water on premises

  •  86% of Nigerians (up to 179 million people) do not have access to safely managed drinking water supply services
  • 67% of the population have access to basic water supply services
  • 92% of the population use improved drinking water supply services, while only 55% have access to improved water supply within the premises
  • 37% of the population use boreholes/tube wells as their main source of drinking water
  • Only 11% of the population use pipe-borne water, and just 4% use pipe-borne water on premises

Access to Water in Nigeria

  • 68% of drinking water used by the household is contaminated by E. coli at the source, and 70% is contaminated at the point of consumption
  • Only 11% of the households take any measure to make their water safe for drinking
  • 84% of the households are not satisfied with the level of their water supply services mainly due to the location and time spent on collection of water
  • The average time to fetch water is 17mins for households whose water points are not located within premises
  • Only about 1 in 5 (20%) households pay any form of tariff to get water from their communal (main) water sources
