Naomi Park, from the United States of America, won the Junior Water Prize at the ongoing World Water Week in Stockholm.
Her research is titled Concurrent Removal of Rising, Soluble Ocean Carbon Dioxide and Oil-in-Water Contaminants via Multi Functional Remediation Framework
Commenting on her project, the jury said:
“the winner is taking a troublesome waste product and using it to help solve a number of the most pressing issues we face in the modern world. By using Styrofoam and creating a ‘sponge’ that absorbs both carbon dioxide and oil products from the ocean, this student built a model and tested it – in multiple conditions, even simulating ocean waves – with impressive results.”
Naomi Park was presented with the award by HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, the Prize’s Official Patron.
Other winners are Ayse Pelin Dedler from Turkiye who won the Diploma of Excellence and Fernando de Silva Hernandez and Carlos Erguizio from Mexico, People’s Choice Award winner
