A Water Vendor, popularly known as ‘Mai Ruwa’, says he makes a daily profit of between 15,000 naira and 18,000 naira, if there is high demand for water supplies.
The water vendor, Malam, spoke to eWASH in Tanke area of Ilorin, Kwara State, North Central Nigeria. Public water supplies poorly service the area, mostly inhabited by students of University of Ilorin.
Mallam told eWASH that he makes about One thousand and two hundred naira (N1200) per trip selling water. Each trip comprises 8 units of 25-litre water gallons packed in a manually pushed truck. He says he buys all eight units for Four hundred naira (N400) from a private borehole and sells all for One thousand and two hundred naira (N1200).
Speaking in the local Hausa language, he said:
‘I earn a lot. I sometimes make at least Fifteen thousand naira (#15,000) in a day if I sell 13 rounds of the trip. Sometimes, I go for 15 rounds, earning up to Eighteen thousand naira (#18,000) daily. I am very pleased with the job, especially if students are in session.’
