There is an outbreak of Cholera in several villages within three communities in Ishielu Local Government of Ebonyi State, South East Nigeria, reports eWASH’s volunteer reporter, Dr Kelechuckwu Okezie.
The affected villages are: Amaleze, Obuchiri, Umuozoke, Iyionwe, Ndiagu Achi, and Amakpa ; within Amaeze-Ezillo, Amaozanu-Ezillo, and Ezillo communities.
Cholera is a water-borne disease that spreads through contamination causing diarrhoea and dehydration.
Dr Okezie who is also National Secretary of the Society for Water and Sanitation and Executive Director of Neighbourhood Environment Watch Foundation an Abakaliki-based non-governmental organisation, reports that the disease’s outbreak started in late November 2022 and spiked this December between 14 and 15 December in three different communities.
Our Volunteer Reporter visited the communities and found that over 47 people (men, women and children) have been treated for Cholera by Zions Hospital, Ezillo, of which 43 have been discharged, and four detained due to the inability to pay their bills.
The General Manager of Ebonyi State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency – Engineer Agwu Joseph has also visited the victims.
