Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (SURWASH) is a $700m World Bank financed programme in seven states of the country.

Launched in 2021, SURWASH is expected to provide six million people with basic drinking water services and 1.4 million people access to improved sanitation services within six years.

The Environmental and Social Systems Assessment (ESSA) examines the extent to which
the Federal and State Government’s existing environmental and social management
systems operate within, an adequate legal and regulatory framework to guide
environmental and social impact assessments, mitigation, management and monitoring at
the PforR Program level; and incorporate recognized elements of good practice in
environmental and social assessment and management. The ESSA thereafter defines
measures to strengthen the system and recommend measures that will be integrated into
the overall Program.
